1. In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful (1).
2. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the universe.
3. The All-Merciful, the Most Merciful,
4. Master of the Day of Retribution.
5. It is You [Alone] that we worship, and it is You [Alone] whom we plead for help.
6. Guide us in the right way,
7. The way of those whom you have showered with favors,
not of those who have incurred Your anger, nor of the
wanderers (2).
(1) This is the formula pronounced by the Muslim at the beginning of every act,
thus remembering his Creator and his Guide and asking His help to do it well.
According to the commentators, it is necessary to imply: "I begin" by the name of Allah, etc.
But as "by the name" gives an ambiguity and can also mean "I swear by the name of Allah",
it is better to exclude here the formula "By the name". Let us only hear "I begin with the name
of Allah". The adjectives Rahman and Rahim are both of the same root, meaning Merciful
(the first being more intense than the other). We therefore translate as "the All-Merciful,
the Most Merciful".
(2) After the recitation, the word "Āmīne" is pronounced.
